Paintable area is not carpet area

Painters measure walls and ceilings, not the floor. For one room: wall area ≈ (length + width) × 2 × height, minus doors and windows, plus the ceiling (length × width) if it is being painted. A common rule of thumb puts the paintable area of a whole home at roughly 3 to 3.5 times its carpet area — useful for a first estimate, confirmed by measuring.

Labour vs material

A per-sq-ft labour rate covers the painter's work. Paint, putty and primer are bought separately — at actual cost — and their quality decides how long the finish lasts. Ask the painter for the quantity estimate and buy the brand and shade yourself if you prefer.

Putty and primer: when you need them

Fresh walls, walls with cracks or peeling paint, and a change from oil-based to emulsion need surface preparation — scraping, crack filling, putty and primer. Repainting a wall in good condition may need only one or two coats of paint. Damp patches must be fixed at the source before any paint holds.

When to paint

Exterior painting and waterproofing are best done in the dry months, after the monsoon. Interior painting works year-round, but the weeks before Diwali are the busiest — book early.

How long it takes

A 2BHK repaint with minimal putty usually takes a few working days; fresh putty work adds drying time between coats.
